    Songwriter’s Circle of Hope

The Songwriter’s Circle of Hope is a non-profit group of musicians, families and friends who have taken on the task of raising funds to help in the fight against cancer.

I lost my wife Kelly Lynn Smith to cancer in September 2005.  Through two years of chemo and radiation, Kelly was a trooper who lived life to the fullest everyday and had the strength to help other people who were going through the same thing. She had the utmost respect for the doctors, nurses and palliative care staff who treated her with kindness, care and compassion.

To honor Kelly, I felt I had to do something to help with the fight against this ugly disease.  With the help of long-time friend and musician Alton MacKinnon, who had also lost a loved one to cancer, the idea for Songwriter’s Circle of Hope was born.

We held our first event in Sydney Mines in November of last year with four performers singing and talking about songs that they had written themselves.

The response was so overwhelming that we had another event in North Sydney at the Northern Yacht Club, and tripled funds raised.  All monies from both events were donated entirely to the Canadian Cancer Society.

We plan on donating 100% of the funds from these events to the CB Regional Hospital’s Cancer Treatment Centre.  These funds will remain in Cape Breton to help the overwhelming number of local people who are suffering from this disease.

We are very pleased with the tremendous public support we have received at each event, and would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the many musicians who so generously donate their time and talent. Our success relies on the compassion and generosity of our musical talent, volunteers and the support of the local community.

We also have setup this website that can be viewed at www.sch.sydcb.com. We welcome everybody who wishes to post a memorial here for loved ones.  Above all, we encourage everyone to stop by to enjoy a night of music for a good cause.

Yours sincerely,
